Farmaajo picks senior aid to oversee elections

President Mohamed Farmaajo has appointed a 25 member team to oversee the upcoming elections fronting henchmen among them Villa Somalia deputy chief of staff Abdinur Mohamed.

The appointments unveiled Thursday also include a separate list of 25 members for the dispute resolution committee.

The Federal Elections Committee (FEC) will be conducting the elections of the 275 member Lower House in coordination with the State Level Elections Committees (SLEC) in the Federal Member States.

State parliaments will elect the 54 Senators who will together with the MPs elect a new president in the first week of February.

The FEC and SLEC will now proceed to oversee the selection of the close to 30,000 delegates who will elect the MPs. The delegates are selected jointly by clan elders and civil society groups in coordination the regional governments.

According to the agreement settled on by the FGS and FMS leaders in September in Mogadishu, each MP will be elected by 101 delegates distributed within a clan matrix.

Parliamentary elections are set to kick off next month.
