Al-Shabaab attacks Afgoye base as army celebrates national armed forces day

GOOBJOOG NEWS/AFGOYE: Heavy fighting erupted early Wednesday morning after Al-Shabaab fighters reportedly attacked army and police military bases in Afgoye town, Lower Shabelle region.

The militants are said to have launched a barrage of attacks on the checkpoints of the small bridge and the checkpoints near Bula Fuliyo area, with the fighting reported to have lasted more than an hour.

Witnesses said there were casualties in the fighting, although the exact number of casualties is yet unknown. Reports also said that some shots were fired at some neighbourhoods in the district.

The attack on the bases belonging to the Somali troops came whilst the army was celebrating the 62nd anniversary of their establishment on Tuesday. 

No further details have been released about the fighting in Afgoye area but the situation is said to have returned back to normal at daybreak.
