Al-Shabaab militants ratchet up attacks against AU forces in southern Somalia

The militant group Al-Shabaab Friday fired mortar shells targeting an Amisom based in Balcad in Middle Shabelle region.

According to some local residents, the incident took place in Hawo Taako, Balcad district and confirmed two people were injured, including an elder and a child.

Meanwhile, yesterday in Gedo region Al-Shabaab fighters were reported to have ambushed Kenyan troops, who came from the Garilley area on their way to Fafahduun. There were unconfirmed cases of casualties.

Al-Shabaab has carried several attacks on AMISOM and government forces base in different locations in southern Somalia in the recent weeks.

The group was pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 by Somali troops backed by AMISOM soldiers.
