American replaces Somalia’s Yusuf as ICJ president

GOOBJOOG NEWS|THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has appointed a new president replacing Somali’s Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf who has been heading the global court for two years now.

Joan E. Donoghue who has been serving in the UN court since 2010 has been elected president of the court and will be deputised by Russia’s Kirill Gevorgian.

Donoghue, an American replaces justice Yusuf who has been president of the court since 2018 when he oversaw the maritime case between Kenya and Somalia.

Another round of oral proceedings in the maritime case resumes next month having been postponed three times since mid-2019.

Three Africans- Julia Sebutinde (Uganda), Somalia’s Yusuf and Mohamed Bennouna (Morocco) form the 15 member bench.
