Banaadir administration has announced it will employ 1,000 youth drawn from all the 17 districts in the region to enable young people engage in gainful employment, Banaadir governor Mohamed Thabit has said.

The mayor said the youth will be employed as casual labourers for a six month contract and will be entitled to a $150 monthly salary.

Thabit noted the job creation programme for the youth was in line with the Prime Minister’s appeal to the regional administration during the Worth Youth Day celeberations last month to create jobs for the youth in Banaadir.

Unemplyment among the youth in Somalia remains significantly high with the UN estimating that 67% of the youth are without any gainful employment yet they make upwards of 75% of the country’s population.

Each of the 17 districts in Banaadir will be allocated 58 slots and the candidates will be required to posses at least a secondary school education and must be aged between 18-29. The mayor emphasized the distribution will be done transparently and ensuring equal distribution between male and female candidates.

“Out of the 1,000 youth jobs, only 14 positions will remain [after distributing quotas for the 17 districts] and we have to be transparent with our dealings towards the Somali citizens. We shall announce later how the remaining 14 positions will be implemented,” the mayor said.
