Somaliland president Muse Bihi has said his administration will release Puntland soldiers captured during conflict between the two regions in Tukaraq last year.

Speaking during the 28 year anniversary since Somaliland broke away to pursue independence from Somalia, Bihi said it was imperative that Somaliland maintains good relations with its neighbour.

“I would like to declare that we are ready to release the prisoners from Tukaraq conflict who are in our custody and ask them to hand over what they have,” said Bihi.

The deadly clashes in 2017 and 2018 in Tukaraq in Sool region which is contested by both Puntland and Somaliland claimed several lives including dozens of soldiers.

Bihi added that his administration will also work with Red Cross to facilitate the transfer of the soldiers.
