Ethiopia assures its commitment in ousting Al-Shabaab

Storyline:National News

Britain has called on Ethiopia to step up support towards the peace and stability of neighbouring Somalia.

Ambassador Berhane Gebre-christos, Ethiopian State Minister for Foreign Affairs, held talks on Wednesday with Hugh Powell, Britain’s Deputy National Security Adviser, on the current state of affairs in East Africa, particularly in Somalia.

Mr. Powell reminded Ambassador Berhane of Britain’s intent to host an international conference on Somalia in September. He called on Ethiopia to prove its commitment to the cause of Somalia’s peace, security and development at the conference.

Ambassador Berhane for his part assured Mr. Powell of Ethiopia’s commitment to work together with AMISOM in ousting Al-Shabaab and bringing peace and stability in Somalia.

Ethiopian troops have earlier this year joined the African Union mission in Somalia known as AMISOM, to support the Somali security force in its battle against al-Shabab.

Ethiopia is the sixth African country to contribute troops to the AU force in Somalia after Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Djibouti and Sierra Leone.  Ethiopia’s contribution took the AU force in Somalia to 22,000 troops.
