Ethiopian forces took control of the key Somali town of Goofgaduud which lies just 30km south of Baidoa town.

Goobjoog News correspondent in Baidoa, Adan Geesay said that the Ethiopian troops seized the town following the withdrawal of Al-Shabaab militants.

Somali military officials also confirmed the recapture of the town saying that there was no resistance from the militants.

The troops is said to have positioned in the outskirt of Goodgaduud.

Goofgaduud lies about 250 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu, the capital, in an area where the militants and government soldiers fought several times in the past.

Al-Shabab had previously taken control of major towns and villages vacated by the Ethiopians.

Late last year, Ethiopian forces withdrew from several towns in Southern Somalia including Gofgaduud, where they had been battling Islamist militants citing lack of support.

The East African country has thousands of other troops that are part of AMISOM in Somalia.
