GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The EU ambassador to Somalia Nicolas Berlanga has termed the deal between outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo and fugitive former Jubbaland security minister Abdirashid Janan a ‘short term gain’.

The outspoken ambassador lamented the plight of victims of Janan’s alleged atrocities hours after the recently sacked minister was embraced by federal ministers in Belet-Hawo.

“My thoughts to the victims, to the people, displaced, to the young Somalis who aspire to a peaceful and fair society where the law is equal to everybody,” Berlanga said in a tweet.

“I am sure those thinking on the short term gains will not forget a society needs solid pillars to build the future.”

Janan was received Wednesday in Belet-Hawo by state transport minister Abdirahman Dheere and deputy information minister Abdirahman Adale. The wanted former minister drove in a convoy of technicals accompanied by heavily armed security forces.

The former minister is wanted for the massacre of civilians and violations of human rights between according to the UN and the Federal Government. A former UN panel, the UN Monitoring Group for Somalia and Eritrea documented what it termed as atrocities by Janan during his reign as district commissioner in Gedo region between 2014 and 2017.

Amnesty International called for Janan’s prosecution and justice for his victims.

“Now that Abdirashid Janan is in the hands of the federal government of Somalia, authorities must ensure justice and accountability for all the alleged human rights violations he committed in Gedo. Victims and impacted families deserve justice,” Amnesty said in a tweet.
