The minister for justice and constitutional affairs Farah Sheik Abdikadir stated that the federal government of Somalia will take steps to protects the rights of Somali nationals who are unjustly detained in world prisons.
“ it is unfortunate that thousands of Somali nationals are unjustly confined in world prisons without trial” the minister said.
The minister was speaking during the conclusion of five days judicial reform conference in Mogadishu that was attended by ministers, lawmakers, Somalia Attorney General, religious leaders and members from civil society.
Mr. Abdikadir said that his ministry regularly receive complains from the jailed prisoners on discrepancy in sentences adding that the federal government will soon act to transfer the prisoners back to Somalia so as to come closer to their families and end their remaining jail terms in the country.
Most of the prisoners complain that they are not given chance to appeal against the convictions.
Puntland regional state with the help of United Nations opened a new prison in Garowe for convicted pirates and those transferred from outside countries.
