Five die in clash between Galmudug and Puntland forces

Heavy fighting which lasted up to five hours between Puntland and Galmudug forces took place in the town of Galkaayo, which reportedly left at least five  people dead, with many more injured.

The clashes began this morning after Puntland forces reportedly attacked Galmudug forces  who were holding control over the disputed area, causing a heavy fight to break out between the two in which both sides used heavy weaponry.

The ceasefire deal by the two warring sides which was dashing hopes of peace has come to an end as the two sides mobilized forces in the area and engaged fighting.

Hundreds of residents have fled from their homes many Somalis fear that the new fighting could escalate to a full blown conflict.

Last week fighting between forces allied to Galmudug and Puntland administrations have killed 11 civilians in Galkaayo town following a disagreement over the construction of a road in Galkaayo town by Puntland administration.

Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke flew to Garowe after a short visit to Adado town, the headquarters of Galmudug state where he held meetings with the sides.

Galkayo is divided into two zones, where the northern portion forms part of Puntland state, while its southern part is governed by the Galmudug administration.
