Former Somali lawmaker opposes newly approved newly appointed electoral commission

Former Somali lawmaker, Salad Ali Jelle has strongly opposed the country’s  newly appointed federal level electoral commission.

Jelle has called on Somali government to exclude the minister from the country’s federal level electoral commission

The commission was appointed on 17th this month by Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud through presidential decree.

Jelle said the commission should be imperial and would not include current government leaders.

“The commission should not be included the government ministers, we want everything to be transparent,” said Jelle.

Five current serving ministers and four regional states ministers top the list.

Interior and federalization minister Abdirhman Odowa, human rights and women minister Zahara Ali Samatar, Information minister Mohammed Abdi Hayer, Constitution minister Hussien Mahmoud Sheikh Hussien, scholars and regional states ministers make up the members of the commission.

The commission is tasked to prepare schedules, calendars and the facilities of this year’s general elections.
