Puntland’s Gaas appoints vetting committee for parliamentary selection

Puntland President Abdiweli Gaas Monday announced an eight-member dispute resolution and vetting committee for the upcoming parliamentary selection.

The committee which will be chaired by Osman Ismail Barre will be tasked with vetting the parliamentary candidates and addressing electoral disputes and complaints during the parliamentary selections slated for December 10.

The 66 member state assembly is based on a clan nomination system in which case elders from the respective sub-clans submit names of candidates for the parliamentary seats allocated to the vetting and dispute resolution committee.

The committee will vet the candidates upon which they can approve or send back.

The new parliament will elect a new president January 8.
