GMG journalist shot by police officer undergoes first surgery

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Goobjoog Media Group cameraman Sharma’arke Abdinuur Weheliye who was shot by a policeman last Sunday has undergone a stomach operation but remains in critical condition.

Doctors at a hospital in Mogadishu where the journalist is admitted say they concluded the operation and waiting for him to heal before another operation on the hand begins. “We have concluded the operation on his stomach but we cannot do the hand operation now until his body stabilises,” the doctor at the hospital who requested anonymity said.

Weheliye was shot by a police officer at Sinai junction in northern Mogadishu Sunday evening. The bullet hit him from the right, through his stomach and exited from his left hand.

Government authorities said police a manhunt for the officer who disappeared after the shooting incident is still on.

Goobjoog Media Group is demanding justice for the shooting of Wehliye. “We want justice for our colleague and I urge the government to ensure the officer responsible for this heinous act is brought to justice,” GMG deputy director Abdiaziz Gurbiye said.
