Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to officially take over as Somalia’s 10th president today

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Preparations are set for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to officially take office today after he was elected in a competitive Presidential election held at the Afisyoni tent on May 15.

Outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo is expected to hand over power to Mohamud after serving for a period of five years at the country’s top office. The two leaders have spent the better part of this week touring various departments at The Villa Somalia and discussed matters of national interest and the handover of power. 

A brief ceremony is scheduled to be conducted at the Presidential Palace where the Farmaajo will hand over instruments of power to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who once led the country between 2012 and 2017.

Somalia’s Director of Communication of the Presidency Abdirashid Hashi has confirmed that former Presidents, Prime Ministers, lawmakers of both Houses and the outgoing administration are expected to grace today’s inauguration ceremony. 

Farmaajo’s one term in office ended after Mohamud beat him after garnering 214 votes against the latter’s 110 votes.
