GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The international community has expressed display by Somaliland’s failure to withdraw forces in Lasanod despite a commitment to ending the fighting in the contested region.

A group of 16 Western countries said in a joint statement Monday that both sides in the conflict must stick to their promises of ending the fighting. The remarks come amid several statements by both Somaliland and the SSC-Khatumo faction to end the fighting which has now entered the 10th week.

“Partners were disappointed that H.E. the President did not commit to a withdrawal of Somaliland forces centered around Laascaanood,” diplomats said following a video conference with Somaliland president Muse Bihi.

The partners which included the US and the EU said the ‘worrying situation is seriously impacting discussions about their engagement with Somaliland.

Despite these calls, the situation in Las’anod remains tense. Sources in the town said both sides fought again Monday morning on the eastern side of the town.
