IGAD raises concerns over military power of regional states in Somalia

Storyline:National News

Regional authority, IGAD envoy to Somalia Mohammad Abdi Afey has raised the red flag over militarization of the regional administrations noting that only the Federal government should be in charge of the military component of security in the country.

Speaking at peace agreement signing event in Galkaayo, the envoy said IGAD the recent clash between Galmudug and Puntland brought to the fore the military power the regional administration hold adding that this was not in the best interests of the country.

“Somalia needs a national army, why do states have all this power? Ten sovereign states cannot work in the country, we want to see the role of federal government to prevail here,” said the envoy.

The envoy asked parties of conflict to respect the terms of agreement and not to wage wars against each other but rather end their difference through peace manners.

IGAD has been an important player in Somali politics since the collapse of Somali strong central government 25 five years ago.
