Ilhan Omar sworn in as American legislator

Ilhan Omar who elected in House District 60B elected to the State Capitol has made history when she was sworn in today making her to become the first Somali-American and second Muslim-American who used the Holy Quran on swearing-in day.

Ilhan Omar defeated 44-years term Representative Phyllis Kahn for Minnesota House District 60B in August.

Omar was a Somali immigrant who fled civil war that broke out in her home country of Somalia as a child.

Omar was recently named an assistant minority leader by House Democrats.

Omar spent days in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, Galkaayo in central Somalia and Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi with her father and husband Ahmed Hirsi before she went back to US to sworn in as State Representative for House District 60B.

Keith Ellison was the first Muslim who used the Quran on swearing-in day during his tenure in the Minnesota House.
