GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: A joint technical committee is meeting today in Mogadishu to set the framework for the new round of talks between the Federal Government and the Federal Member States on May 20.

The committee drawn from the two levels of government is expected to work out on some of the contentious issues and set out the terms of reference for the meeting which is expected to agree on the way forward to allow Somalia to head to the polls.

Prime Minister Mohamed Roble who will be leading the talks called for the May 20 meeting after outgoing president Mohamed Farmaajo handed him the mandate. Farmaajo failed to bring together regional states governments and went ahead to collude with the Lower House to add himself two years in office.

A Lower House resolution on term extension was subsequently revoked following intense local and international pressure. The current technical committee is expected to build on recommendations of a previous committee that developed the Baidoa Framework to guide the implementation of the September 17, 2020 Agreement.
