Kenyan court sentences two terrorists to 36 years in jail over Garissa University attack

GOOBJOOG NEWS | NAIROBI: Two terrorists have been sentenced to 36 years in jail by a Kenyan court after being found guilty of carrying out an attack at Garissa University that left over 147 people dead.

The High Court in Nairobi which found Hassan Edin Hassan and Mohamed Abdi Abikar to have been the prime masterminds of the 2015 attack dismissed their appeal against the conviction.

Twenty-two witnesses testified against them, including students who survived the attack.

Justice Cecilia Githua while delivering the ruling said she was satisfied that the circumstantial evidence by the prosecution left no doubt that the two were aware of the said plan and the actual perpetrators of the attack.

The court further ruled that their actions and those of their accomplices were premeditated acts which no doubt caused suffering to the families of the deceased victims and will continue to traumatise the victims who were lucky to survive for the rest of their lives.

“Terrorism is a grave and heinous transnational crime which not only has devastating effects on its victims but also poses a serious threat to both national and global peace and security,” the court ruled
