Kenyan security forces killed two Al-Shabaab militants in a fire exchange in the outskirts of Dadaab camp early Tuesday.

A regional commissioner in region told the media four school children were killed by stray bullets during the attack.

“I can confirm that there was an attack which happened early this morning where four civilians were killed and two militants were gunned down,” North Eastern Regional Police Commander Paul Soi told the local daily, Daily Nation.

Sources said the militants which numbered around 12 had attempted to attack a Saretho Police Patrol base which is 25 kilometers from Dadaab refugee camp at about 1am.

Police said two AK47 firearms and two IEDs were recovered. The militants also attempted to destroy a telecommunication mast after they were repulsed by security forces, police said.

The attack comes barely two days after Al-Shabaab attacked a military base which hosts Kenyan and US troops in the coastal region of Lamu. The US military said it lost three personnel and two others were injured.
