A 32-year-old man convicted of rape and murder was today executed by firing squad in Garbahare in Gedo region.

Garbahare district court had sentenced the man to death and today signed off his execution after being found guilty of raping and killing a woman last month.

The deputy commissioner of Garbahare Adan Sirad Mohamud confirmed the execution to Goobjoog News noting the family of the man identified as Mohamud Ali Hamu were present during the execution.

“The man found guilty of raping and killing a woman 30 days ago was executed today. Soldiers from the federal government and district administration executed him after the family agreed with the ruling of the court,” said Mohamud.

The defendant was executed by firing squad at a public arena.

The close relatives and both families were satisfied with the case, said Mohamud. “During the trial, both families were contented with the judgement was read.”

The execution of the Hamu came barely four days after a court in Garowe sentenced five men to death for rape and murder of a 16 year old girl in Galkayo. A similar case is pending in Galkaayo following the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl last week.
