ONLF announce a new political party

The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has today officially announced that they have established a political party that will be operating in the Somali regional state and also take part in Ethiopian politics.

Sheikh Abdirahman Mohamed Sheikh Mahdi (Made), the secretary general of the ONLF, told the BBC that they will take a full range of the upcoming elections in the Somali region and would also cooperate with the other political parties in the region.

“The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has been one of the political parties that participated the first election of the region in 1991, and today were are declaring that we are back to the political arena and ready to designate a peaceful politics and associate in the upcoming elections of the region.” Said Maadey.

The ONLF army has returned back to the Somali regional state from their base in Eritrea in early December 2018 after the group had reached an agreement with the government of Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian government and the ONLF signed a peace deal in Asmara that allows the ONLF to undertake peaceful political struggle in Ethiopia.
