People in Elbur face desperate humanitarian conditions

Conditions for hundreds of residents in Hawadley locality, Lower Shabelle region continue to worsen daily, with hunger, disease and lack of shelter taking their toll on an already vulnerable population, according to local sources.

The officials of Elbur administration said that to access to medicine and food is the residents main challenges as the NGOs that area stopped operations.

“There are no full operating NGOs in the village, We have so many problems, including hunger and many of us are without shelter as the [polythene] coverings are now worn out. We live in the open where our children just wander around as they do not go to school,”

Access to clean drinking water in the area where the displaced have gone “is a nightmare, particularly in this village where there is dire need for water provision,” according to Mohamed Ali. a resident of Elbur.

“Young girls and women travel long distances to fetch water… This is sometimes dangerous for them, especially when they are unaccompanied,” he said.

Finally, he called on the humanitarian aid agencies to deliver emergency support and save the lives of the displaced people.
