Police seize, destroy alcoholic drinks in Beletweyne

Police in Beletweyne have destroyed an assortment of alcoholic drinks originating from neighbouring Ethiopia.

The drugs which were seized alongside household items were set ablaze by police in the town witnessed by local officials including the mayor and regional police chief.

Beletweyne police commander Mohamed Qorsheel told journalists the driver of the vehicle transporting the banned substances had been arrested. He added that the alcohol was imported from Ethiopia. Alcohol sale and use in Somalia is prohibited.

He thanked security officials and locals for cooperating in tracking down the vehicle transporting the substance. The police officer said the drugs were destined for the capital Mogadishu.
