President Gaas urge parents to fight FGM for their children’s health

The president of semi autonomous regional state of Puntland Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas attending ceremony aimed at opposing female genital mutilation (FGM) said he is concerned about the continuation of harmful practice against young girls in the region.

Mr. Gaas stated that his administration will take steps to stop the practices by imposing strict rules adding that FGM was earlier uprooted in most areas of Puntland state but is actively employed in IDP camps.

He urged the parents to take active of stopping the harmful traditional practices for the better of their children’s health and better future.

The ceremony was organized by the ministry of women affairs of Puntland, the minister, Anisa Haji Mumin speaking at the ceremony stressed the significance of such a ceremony as it is being held at a time when Somalia and Puntland in particular is striving to avoid the backward and harmful practices through adopting public statement prohibiting harmful traditional practices, FGM.
