Puntland Refuses To Recognize Federal Independent Commissions

wasiirada PuntlandIn a cabinet meeting, Puntland state of Somalia has refused to recognize two key federal independent commissions passed by the federal parliament recently.

Puntland has said that the appointments of the commissions was not consulted with member states as stipulated in the constitution and therefore view it as an illegal and unconstitutional.

The cabinet chaired by president Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gas has also decided that the New Deal Pact is not implemented accordingly; therefore the president has directed the planning minister to review the aid pact.

Puntland’s position on the commissions is part of many such decisions that form part of the rocky relationship between the state and the federal government.

This decision may jeopardize the future work of the commissions, especially the boundaries commission which has to demarcate the disputed borders of Puntland and Galmudug.
