Puntland says will pay family of killed girl, ignores pleas for legal action

GOOBJOOG NEWS|PUNTLAND:   Puntland government has remained mute on demands for legal action against a police officer who killed a 15 year of girl and instead offered to compensate.

Security Minister Abdisamad Gallan said in a statement Tuesday the government will pay the family of Nadiro Faysal Shire who was shot dead on December 26 in Garowe.

According to various reports, the family had demanded the prosecution of the officer but there has since been no word from the state government on the pleas of the family.

The family had declined to burry their daughter before the government commits to prosecute the officer.  The deceased was finally buried on Tuesday after nine days.

‘Blood money’ compensation for deaths is an age-old practice in Somalia but has been widely condemned in recent years as promoting impunity.

The family of a man convicted for the murder of a 12-year-old girl in 2018 had their son spared the firing squad February last year after they entered into a ‘blood money’ deal with the family of the dead girl.
