Security Council condemns Mogadishu terror attack

The UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres have condemned the Saturday terror attack in Mogadishu which has claimed close to 300 lives so far and more than 300 others admitted in various hospitals in Mogadishu.

The Council said in a joint statement ‘any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of the motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomever committed.’

“The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families and victims as well as to the people and government of Somalia. The members of the Security Council wished a quick recovery to those injured,” the UNSC said.

UN chief Guterres also condemned the attacks calling for unity among Somalis in countering terrorism and violent extremism while reiterating the call for a functional and inclusive federal state in Somalia.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attacks perpetrated yesterday in Mogadishu. He conveys his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes speedy recovery to the injured.”

The US and other countries have also condemned the attack and conveyed messages of peace and condolences to families and the government of Somalia.

“We extend our‎ deepest condolences to all Somalis, especially those who lost friends and family in the attacks. We further wish for a quick recovery for all those injured,” the State Department said.

“In the face of this senseless and cowardly act, the United States will continue to stand with the Somali government, its people, and our international allies to combat terrorism and support their efforts to achieve peace, security, and prosperity.”

Somali government has put the death toll at 276.
