The Senate has called for extension of timelines in the anti-Jawari motion but warned the motion which has dragged into a lengthy political crisis will collapse with the lapse of the new deadline.

The ad hoc committee appointed by the Senate in response to the ongoing stalemate said in its second statement today the life of the motion should be set at March 18, the day Lower House speaker Mohamed Jawari called on the proponents of the motion to table it. The statement comes on the day the earlier deadline for tabling of the motion lapsed.

To avert further political, economic and security instability, the committee said, both parties in the conflict must agree to compromise and cooperate to resolve the matter noting the Senate was ready to oversee and facilitate the debate and voting process.

The same committee issued its first statement last Wednesday in which, among others called for the withdrawal of the new security forces in the Lower House buildings before the House continues with business. So far, the government is yet to respond on the matter as the new security team is still in place.

The seven member committee chaired by speaker Abdi Hashi also recommended President Mohamed Farmaajo should intervene and pressure parties to the political dispute to resolve the matter.

Prime Minister Hassan Khaire and Speaker Mohamed Jawari are at loggerheads over the motion which seeks the ouster of the latter.
