Senators discuss on the drought situation the country is facing

Somalia’s Upper House has debated on how to avert the deteriorating drought that engulfed the horn Africa nation saying the country on the brink of famine.

The Senators raised thousands of dollars for Somalia drought victims in a session held on Saturday at Senate House in Mogadishu, according to our correspondent.

“The members agreed to donate money and each member to contribute an amount of money not less than 1000 thousand US dollars,” said Mohamed Salad, Goobjoog correspondent at the senate.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Somali prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheire participated live TV program to appeal the public to help the victims.

On Friday, The United Nations said it needs $4.4 billion by July to prevent famine in Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and northeastern Nigeria.

U.N. humanitarian chief Stephen O’Brien told Security Council members that the United Nations is facing its largest humanitarian crisis since the organization’s creation. He said that without the necessary funding and full, safe and unimpeded access for aid workers, people will die.

Last week alone, 0ver 110 people died of hunger and disease in Baay region only three days after Somali government declared the drought as national disaster.
