Federal government forces together with African Union peace-keeping troops have on Tuesday taken over El-Deer locality in Middle Shabelle region.
The joint forces seized the town without any confrontations from Al-shabab as local residents confirm to the media.
The security officials say that the capture of El-deer marks a key stage in government’s effort to smoke out al-shabab from its strongholds in South and Central Somalia.
Al-shabab declined to give comment about the loss of El-deer to allied forces.
Since operation Indian Ocean was launched, the joint forces seized over seven areas from Al-shabab including the port city of Barawe, the stronghold of the group.
