SNA nabs Al-Shabaab mastermind in Marka, recovers explosives

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: A security operation carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) troops in Marka, Lower Shabelle region, has nabbed one of the ringleaders of the AlQaeda-linked group, Al-Shabaab.

Speaking to the media, Commander of SNA’s October 14th Brigade, Colonel Abdirahman Mohamed Munye, confirmed that the suspect identified as Aweys Mayow Eelay, accused of masterminding several deadly Al-Shabaab bombings in Marka, had been captured during the operation, adding that at the time of his arrest,  Aweys was busy planting landmines in Marka Ade, meant to harm civilians.

A raid at his home also revealed a cache of weapons including grenades and landmines which were confiscated by the security forces.

The SNA official said a spirited operation to flush out members of the group who have continued to cause instability in the Lower Shabelle region will go on until their objective is met.
