Somalia Marks International Mother Language Day

In colorful event organized by the Somali Federal education Ministry and the Somali civil society intended to commemorate International Mother Language Day held today in Mogadishu.
International Mother Language Day –  is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism around the world.
Key federal ministers including Education minister, justice minister, media, academia, writers and civil society attended today’s commemoration event.
Education minister Khadar Bashir Ali addressed to the audience and highlighted the contemporary challenges which faces Somali Language. The minister called the adaption of immediate language policy to help schools and universities use Somali language  as the basic  language educational instructions.

UNESCO in press release emphaised the imortance of mother tongues, in early years of schooling
“On the occasion of the Day, UNESCO reiterates its position on the importance of appropriate languages of instruction, usually mother tongues, in early years of schooling: formal and non-formal education must deliver quality education for all learners by taking a multilingual approach, which has great potential for achieving development goal 4 of the Agenda 2030” said in press release
