Somali Aid Workers Kidnapped in Gedo

Storyline:National News

Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped three local aid workers in south-western Somalia, the latest in series of attacks against the aid workers operating in the horn of Africa nation, local residents said Tuesday.

The three with unspecified local NGO were taken hostage in Siidamo locality which lies 50 km west of Bardhere town as they were on a supervision trip, according to local officials.

No group has immediately claimed the responsibility for abduction, however suspicion falls to the Al-Qaeda linked militants in the region who kidnapped several aid workers before.

No comment could be reached from their employer on the abduction which sent shockwaves across the aid workers still operating in the region which is close to Kenyan border where militants continue to carry out attacks and kidnappings against civilians and government workers.

Somalia is one of the most dangerous countries that aid workers operate. Dozens of aid workers have been killed and others were kidnapped since the collapse of the country’s central government in 1991.
