Somali government deploys more troops after Al-Shabab attacks

Somali government has sent additional soldiers to Qoryooley town after serious attack launched by Al-Shabab fighters two days ago, police said on Wednesday.

The move came after a raft of measures to tighten security in the town including security operations took place.

Amadi Gaabow Buule, Qoryoley police boss confirmed a troop increase in Qoryooley but declined to provide further details.

“For security reasons, we cannot divulge the exact number of troops that will be deployed,” he said.

This comes two days after Al-Shabab fighters raided a government forces base in Qoryoley town of lower Shabelle region.

A fierce gun battle broke out between the two sides in the town’s Wadajir and Hodan neighborhoods.

Despite losing most of its key strongholds in south and central Somalia, al-Shabab continues to carry out attacks on the government and African Union troops across the country.

Al-Shabab, which wants to topple the Western-backed government in Mogadishu, the group also stage frequent suicide attacks inside the capital, Mogadishu.
