Somalia invites on IORA countries to reopen diplomatic missions Base in Mogadishu

The Federal Government of Somalia has called upon the fellow member countries of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to re-open their diplomatic missions in the country.

The request was made during the 3rd Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Blue Economy Ministerial Conference held in Dhaka, Bangladesh last week.

 Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs &International Cooperation, Abdulkadir Ahmed-Kheir Abdi delivered a speech at the 3rd IORA Blue Economy Ministerial Conference. Minister Ahmed-Kheir called on IORA countries to reopen their diplomatic missions in Mogadishu.

The ministers and representatives of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) countries participated in the two-day conference titled ‘Promoting Sustainable Blue Economy – making the best use of opportunities from the Indian Ocean’.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who opened the conference urged the IORA member states to respond quickly to save the marine ecological system as the protection of ocean and sea resources is essential to get long-term benefits from the Indian Ocean belt.

 The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), formerly known as the Indian Ocean Rim Initiative and Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC), is an international organization consisting of 22 coastal states bordering the Indian Ocean.

It brings together representatives of Government, Business, and Academia, for promoting co-operation and closer interaction among them.

 The organization was first established as Indian Ocean Rim Initiative in Mauritius on March 1995 and formally launched on 6–7 March 1997 by the conclusion of a multilateral treaty known as the Charter of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation.
