Somalia records 90 COVID-19 cases as pandemic resurges

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: A further 90 people tested positive for COVID-19 Monday maintaining a 6% infection rate in two days as the country braces for a resurgence of the global pandemic.

The Ministry of Health said Monday 90 people out of 1529 tests returned a positive test for the virus with majority recorded in Banaadir region. Out of the 90 cases, 66 were from Banaadir region followed by Somaliland with 19 cases.

Four cases were recorded in HirShabelle and one in South West state. On February 14, the Ministry recorded 91 cases with 85 of them captured in Banaadir region. This was out of 1202 tests.

The Ministry of Health has warned of rising cases of COVID-19 and called for adherence to health measures following close to five months lull that has seen most of the measures dropped or ignored by the public and government officials.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Abikar Fawzia Monday signed a bilateral deal with Italian ambassador to Somalia Alberto Vecchi which aims at supporting and equipping public medical facilities in the country.
