Speaker Madobe meets with Drought Relief Committee

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Lower House Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe) today received in his office the National Drought Relief Committee to address the severe drought situation in the country.

The meeting discussed the need to provide humanitarian assistance to Somali people stricken by hunger due to the drought that has ravaged several parts of the country.

The drought mitigation committee proposed to the chairman of the House that a part of the registration fees paid in by Presidential candidates should be set aside to meet humanitarian needs of the Somali people.

Somali Presidential Candidates, close to 40, each parted with $ 40,000 to register as candidates for the country’s top seat.

For his part, the Lower House Speaker promised  the committee that he will work with the council to help mitigate the crisis facing the country, adding that he will consider their demands.

Today’s meeting comes amidst a report issued by IOM Somalia indicating that over 6 million Somalis face extreme hunger and thousands have been forced to move in search of water, food and pasture.
