At least three police officers have been killed and two others were wounded after their vehicle ran over landmine suspected to have been buried by Al-Shabaab fighters.

The incident happened near Kulan Dam in Liboi, Garissa County early Wednesday morning.

North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mohamud Saleh said the police officers were travelling along the Liboi-Milan road in the vehicle belonging to the Kulan Administration Police Post when it hit the Improvised Explosive Device.

The attack comes barely a day after Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet warned that some members of the terrorist group had sneaked into the country and were planning attacks.

In the last two weeks, attacks by the group in Garissa and Mandera counties have increased after a lull of near half a year.

In Mandera County, mid this month, Landcruiser owned by Contraction Company was destroyed by landmine two days after Omar-Jiliow chief was killed by suspected Al-Shabab fighters.
