Two killed in Hargeisa, property destroyed as heavy rains wreak havoc

At least two people lost their lives on Monday afternoon after a perimeter wall collapsed on them as they shielded from the rain in Hargeisa town.

Mohamed Omar who confirmed the incident said the deceased persons were taking shelter before they met the untimely death.

The two included one adult female and a man. “The two people were sheltering from the heavy rains which started at around the better part of Monday afternoon” Omar.

He said the wall of the house came down during the heavy downpour that rocked the town yesterday.

Most of the roads were affected by floods.

In separate incidents, twenty others reportedly sustained injuries after their houses collapsed and were taken to the hospital.

Farah Osman, resident in Hargeisa say he saw five people who were seriously injured and were taken to nearby hospital.

Hargeisa Mayor Abdirahman Soltelco has visited the scene of the destroyed building on hours after the incident.

The downpours, the heaviest since the start of the rainy season, have caused flooding and landslides in many areas of the town.

Pictures broadcast by local media showed, civilians searching through the rubble of the collapsed buildings for survivors.

Soltelco, told the reporters that the roads that were impassable as a result of the heavy downpour that started at 4pm.

“The roads are flooded and fire engines cannot pass,” said Soltelco.

The heavy downpour left the town dwellers stranded.

This prompted city residents to adopt survival strategies in frantic efforts to avoid the storm waters.

He urged the residents of the town to be cautious.
