Ugandan army has said two of its soldiers were killed by Al-Shabaab militants in Marka ahead of President Mohamed Farmaajo’s visit to the coastal town last week.

Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki, Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) deputy military spokesman told the media the two army men were killed in an ambush by Al-Shabaab.

“I can confirm there was an ambush on our troops who were on patrol in Marka and we lost two soldiers. We also have some injured,” Akiiki said.

“We are waiting for the details, names of deceased soldiers and injured from AMISOM so that we inform their next of kin and family,” he added.

President Farmaajo visited Marka on 14th and 15th of this month where he met the military and residents.

Al-Shabaab had earlier claimed it killed 15 Amisom soldiers.

Over ten Ugandan soldiers were killed in a deadly Al-Shabaab ambush in a military base in Janaale in Lower Shabelle region in 2015. The group later executed one of the soldiers captured during the attack early 2017.

Uganda contributes about 6.500 soldiers to AMISOM.
