GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The US government has donated close to 300,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to bolster the fight against the pandemic in Somalia.

The U.S. embassy in Mogadishu said in a statement additional 286,650 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 had arrived in the country under the WHO-run COVAX facility.

“This shipment is part of our commitment to lead the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerate the global vaccine distribution as the world’s largest single donor to COVAX,” the statement read in part.

To date, the United States has delivered more than 500 million doses of vaccine to more than 115 countries. The commitment to provide COVID-19 vaccines to 92 Gavi Advance Market Commitment economies and African Union member states will continue to fulfil U.S. President Biden’s commitment to strengthen the fight against the global pandemic, the embassy added.
