UN, AMISOM condemn twin suicide bomb attacks in Mogadishu

UN and AMISOM on Saturday condemned the twin suicide car bomb attacks in the capital Mogadishu that killed at least 11 people and injured 11 others.

In separate statements, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia Nicholas Haysom condemned in the strongest possible terms yesterday’s twin bombings in the Somali capital that reportedly killed at least 11 people.

Nicholas Haysom said the attacks in Mogadishu today signify another cowardly assault against the people of Somalia and their inherent right to live in peace and dignity.

“We urge the Somali authorities to spare no effort in fighting the agents of violent extremism who bear responsibility for this heinous crime.” Said Nicholas Haysom

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Somalia Nicholas Haysom send condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, and we wish the wounded a full recovery from their injuries.”

Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Francisco Madeira also condemned the simultaneous bomb attacks in Mogadishu on Saturday morning.

These senseless, heinous attacks by Al-Shabaab will not change the course of progress happening in Somalia,” Ambassador Madeira, the AU Special Representative for Somalia said.

On behalf of AMISOM, Ambassador Madeira condoles with the families of those killed in the attacks and wishes those injured a quick recovery.

The first explosion of the twin attacks  went off at around 9.30 am at the local time near the National Theater which is situated near the parliament headquarter and a vehicle loaded with explosives went off at a security checkpoint in the area causing casualties.

At least 15 minutes later the second blast happened near the tomb of the Unknown Soldier just not far from the first one.
