UN congratulates President Hassan Sheikh, lauds Farmaajo for accepting defeat

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The United Nations in Somalia has congratulated Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on his election as the country’s tenth president, in a competitive election that took place on Sunday in the country’s capital, Mogadishu.

The UN in Somalia said it looked forward to working with the newly-elected president alongside his team to advance national priorities, such as peace, security and stability in the coming years.

A statement by the the UN also praised Somalia’s outgoing President Mohamed Hussein Farmaajo for transferring power honorably and peacefully to his successor.

“The UN in Somalia expresses appreciation to outgoing President Mohamed Farmaajo for honoring the Somali tradition of immediately accepting the election results and pledging support to his successor,” read the Twitter post.

Meanwhile, the UN praised Somalia’s parliamentary Speakers and Deputy Speakers, Speakers, Presidential Election organizing committee, parliamentary staff, Somali security forces and the African Transition Mission in Somalia for ensuring the orderly, peaceful and secure presidential election.
