Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped a journalist in the outskirt of Mogadishu on Saturday early morning.

The journalist kidnapped was identified as Ismail Yussuf was working for a local radio in Wanlaweyn town just 50 miles northwest of the capital Mogadishu,

Ismail Mire, director of Wanlaweyn Radio and the local people in the town have confirmed the abduction of Mr Yussuf.

“Ismail Yussuf was abducted on Saturday morning from his house in Wanlaweyn town. and still, the local people are making serious efforts to rescue him alive,” he said Ismail mire.

The gunmen were suspected to be the Somali government soldiers who came from the Ballidoogle the American military base just outside of Wanlaweyn town.

the incident happens two days after Abdirisaq Qasim Iman, a cameraman working for privately owned Somali Broadcasting Services (SBS), was shot dead on Thursday, July 26 afternoon by a police officer in the country’s capital city, Mogadishu.

The International Federation of Journalists joins its Somali affiliate, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), in condemning this terrible crime and demanding Somali authorities to bring the alleged perpetrator to justice.

Iman, aged 20, is the first journalist killed in Somalia in 2018. However, his murder is the latest of a series of attacks against journalists in Somalia, a country ranked as one of the most dangerous places in the world for media workers.

Furthermore, attacks on journalists, including threats, aggression, harassment and arbitrary detentions, go mostly unpunished.
