UPDATE: Five killed in bomb explosion in Hamarweyne barely four hours after execution of Al-Shabaab journalist

Five people among them two children of former Banaadir deputy governor Warsame Joda have been killed in a car explosion at a restaurant near the office of Mogadishu mayor.

Banaadir region spokesman Abdifitah Halane told Goobjoog News the explosion which also injured seven people happened at the parking lot of Al-Hindi restaurant which is located behind the offices of the heavily fortified Banaadir governor’s office.

Yusuf Jima’ale is the mayor of Mogadishu and also doubles up as governor of Banaadir region whose headquarters is Mogadishu.

“We have established the death of five people including two children of former deputy governor Warsame Jodah. Seven other people were injured,” said Halane.

Hamarweyne district commissioner whose area of administration the incident occurred confirmed the incident noting police had started investigations.

The development comes barely four hours after the execution of a former Al-Shabaab journalist Hassan Hanafi who was sentenced to death by a military court. Hanafi was found guilty of murdering Sheikh Noor Abkay a journalist working for the state owned Radio Mogadishu on May 4, 2010.

A lawmaker escaped death last week after his car was sprayed with bullets in a drive by shooting in Hamarweyne area.

Three people were killed and five others injured in a car explosion in a nearby Shibis district of Saturday.

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
